Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about REM Freelancer and the Sirius universe.

Installation & Setup

How do I install and play on the REM server?
  1. Download the REM Launcher and run the installer.
  2. Select your desired installation directory during setup. The launcher installs everything needed automatically.
  3. Let the launcher download and apply the mod files (no manual file moving required).
  4. Optional: Link your Discord account via the launcher to unlock exclusive features and protect your character.
  5. Click Play – the REM server will be pre-configured in your Multiplayer server list.

See the full Installation Guide for details.

Something went wrong with my files – what do I do?

Don't worry about searching for executables. Simply open the REM Launcher and click the Repair button. The system will automatically verify your installation, replace missing or corrupted data, and ensure your client is ready for flight.

I see no servers in the Multiplayer list – what's wrong?

The launcher handles the connection to our independent listserver automatically. If the list is empty, ensure your firewall isn't blocking the game and check your freelancer.ini for manual overrides:

  1. Open Freelancer\EXE\freelancer.ini in a text editor.
  2. Under [ListServer], ensure it says: hostname = gun.rem-freelancer.moe.
  3. Save and restart Freelancer.

Note: We provide our own listserver infrastructure to ensure stability independent of old third-party services.

Gameplay

Where are the best missions?

The following bases offer high-level missions paying up to 350 000 credits per run:

BaseSystem
Station JavaTau-23
Planet MaltaOmicron Alpha
Ruiz BaseOmicron Beta
Tripoli ShipyardOmicron Gamma

These bases are in high-risk border systems – bring class 8+ shields.

What is the best fighter?

It depends on your play style. While the classic "Big Three" remain powerful, REM introduces new, exclusive vessels that challenge the old hierarchy.

  • Classic Dogfighting: Sabre, Titan, or Eagle – high agility, class 9/10 weapons.
  • Maximum Durability: Titan or Hammerhead – superior hull and shield capacity.
  • All-rounder: Sabre – the traditional balance of speed and firepower.
  • REM Signature Ships: Keep an eye out for unique REM-exclusive vessels. These ships are designed to excel in our new game modes and offer stats you won't find in vanilla Freelancer.
Discovery is Key: Part of the REM experience is finding and researching new content. Some of our most powerful ships and equipment aren't listed in any public database—you'll have to explore the sector and gather materials to uncover them yourself!

See the Ships page for basic statistics, but remember: the best gear is often found where others fear to fly.

What is the best freighter?

Your choice depends on the scale of your operation and the risks you are willing to take. For agile trading, the Dromedary and Bustard remain top tier. However, for massive bulk trading, REM features the Train—the vessel with the largest cargo hold in Sirius, though it is extremely slow and difficult to maneuver.

  • Bulk Commodity Runs: The Train or the standard Transport are your go-to for maximum profit per trip.
  • Mining Operations: We highly recommend the Armored Transport. Its reinforced hull and specialized defense stats make it the ideal choice for harvesting resources in dangerous asteroid fields.
  • Smuggling & Shortcuts: Smaller freighters are still vital, as they can navigate narrow jump holes that large transports and trains simply cannot fit through.
Risk vs. Reward: A Train full of cargo is a prime target for pirates. In a world with no safe zones, consider hiring an Enforcer for protection before taking your bulk carrier into lawless space.
Where can I get Nomad weapons?

Nomad weapons drop from Nomad NPCs in the deep border systems (Omicron Minor, Omicron Alpha, etc.) and can sometimes be found at pirate bases in the outer edge systems. They are among the best weapons in the game and are not sold at any regular equipment dealer. With REM's crafting system, some Nomad weapon components can also be crafted from rare resources gathered through mining.

Where is Freeport 7? (I heard it was destroyed…)

Freeport 7 was destroyed during the events of the Freelancer campaign and no longer exists as a functional station. The wreck can be found in the Tau-31 system. The other Freeports (1–9, 11) are all intact and accessible.

REM-Specific Features

How does crafting work?

Crafting in REM is a two-tier system involving Schematics and Blueprints. You use raw materials gathered through mining or trade to build weapons, depots, and high-end equipment.

  • Schematics (The Key): Think of a Schematic as your permanent "Master License." It allows you to produce functional Blueprints. Never lose or sell your Schematics unless you want to lose the ability to craft that item!
  • Blueprints (The Product): Blueprints are single-use items generated from your Schematics. These can be used to craft the final product or sold to other players on the Galactic Market.
Critical Warning: If you lose a Schematic, you lose the "knowledge" of that item. Keep your Schematics safe in your most secure depot!

For a deep dive into material requirements and discovery, see the full Crafting Guide.

How does mining work?

Mining in REM is an active process. Fly to a known resource area—for example, the asteroid fields in Dresden. Target a minable asteroid and open fire to break it apart.

  • Extraction: When you hit a minable asteroid, it will break open and release raw resources into space.
  • Harvesting: Continue to blast the fragments or use your Tractor Beam to pull the floating ores into your cargo hold.
  • Respawn: Resource asteroids are part of a dynamic system and will respawn regularly, ensuring a constant supply for dedicated miners.
Pro Tip: Use the Armored Transport for these operations. It’s built to withstand the environmental hazards of asteroid fields and offers enough cargo space to make the trip profitable.

For a list of all minable materials and their locations, check the Mining Guide.

How do I join a faction?

REM uses the classic Vanilla Reputation System. Your standing with factions is determined by your actions: completing missions, destroying ships, or trading with specific bases will shift your reputation.

Unlike pure RPG servers, REM does not have "hard-coded" faction memberships. You remain a free agent in Sirius, allowing you to work for whoever pays the best or fits your current goals.

Under Development: As a PvP-focused server, we are still evaluating a faction system that adds depth without limiting player freedom. If you have a great concept for a PvP-balanced faction system, join our Discord and share your ideas with us!
