Connecting to the Server
After Microsoft shut down the original global server list years ago, the Freelancer community survived thanks to the incredible work of Crazy, who provided a custom listserver for over a decade. We owe him a great debt of gratitude for keeping the multiplayer spirit alive for so long.
Why a New Listserver?
To ensure the long-term independence and stability of REM, we decided to develop our own infrastructure from the ground up. Our goal wasn't just to build a tool for ourselves, but to give something back to the community. That’s why we released the core technology of our Listserver as an Open Source project.
By providing an alternative, open-source solution, we want to ensure that Sirius remains populated and accessible, no matter what happens to individual services.
The REM Launcher automatically points your client to gun.rem-freelancer.moe. If you wish to connect manually or list your own server, edit your Freelancer\EXE\freelancer.ini:
[ListServer]
hostname = gun.rem-freelancer.moe
First Steps In-Game
Character Creation
Bring back a lost legacy: Inspired by classic mods, REM allows for full character customization. Unlike the original game, you can go beyond just a name—choose your starting region, your initial ship, and your spawn location. These choices define your starting point in Sirius and your initial equipment.
Starting Configuration
| Selection | Options | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Region & Base | Liberty, Bretonia, Kusari, or Rheinland | Determines your spawn location. |
| Starting Ship | Light Fighter or Freighter class | Choose your starting tool: Agility for combat and missions, or cargo space for early trading. |
| Equipment | Balanced starting loadouts | Your attributes and gear will evolve and grow with every mission and craft you complete. |
First Missions
- Dock at a station and open the Job Board from the base menu.
- Accept a Level 1–3 mission (patrol / destroy). These pay 10 00 – 10 000 credits.
- Complete missions to increase your reputation with local factions.
- Spend credits on better weapons and shields at the Equipment Dealer.
- Once you can handle it, take higher-level missions for bigger payouts.
High-Value Mission Locations
The following bases offer missions paying up to 350 000 credits per run:
| Base | System | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Station Java | Tau-23 | High-risk, against Outcasts - dropping Kraken 2 and Kraken Turret |
| Station Falkland | Tau-37 | High-risk, against Outcasts - dropping Kraken 2 and Kraken Turret |
| Freeport 5 | Omega 41 | High-risk against Red Hessians - dropping Tizona del Cid |
| Planet Malta | Omicron Alpha | Corsair space – bring good shields |
| Ruiz Base | Omicron Beta | High-risk, high-reward against Gas Miner Guild - dropping SkyB Blasters and SkyB Turret |
| Planete Crete | Omciron Gamma | High-risk against Bounty Hunter Guild - dropping Buckshot, Reaver 2 and Reaver Turret, Buckshot Turret |
| Tripoli Shipyard | Omicron Gamma | Capital ship missions available |
Troubleshooting
Most technical issues can be resolved instantly by using the Repair button integrated into the REM Launcher. It checks your files and restores any missing or corrupted data.
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| Missing or corrupted files | Open the REM Launcher and click the Repair button. This will verify your installation and fix most common issues automatically. |
| Game crashes on launch | Ensure you are running the game as Administrator. To avoid permission issues, we recommend installing REM into a directory with full write access (avoid C:\Program Files\ if possible). |
| In-game lag or latency | Our infrastructure uses a custom load-balancing system optimized for the European region. While we strive for peak performance, latency may vary depending on your distance to our nodes. We are constantly optimizing and may add further regional locations as the community grows. |
| Server list is empty | The launcher configures the master list automatically. If it's missing, ensure your firewall isn't blocking the launcher and that gun.rem-freelancer.moe is set in your freelancer.ini. |
| Discord authentication | If the login window doesn't appear, check if your browser or an ad-blocker is preventing pop-ups. The authentication requires a brief browser-based handshake. |
